For Classic Era or Hardcore, plan around the pet you will keep. A temporary pet can teach you a rank, but that rank is only useful if your permanent pet's family can learn it.

How many training points does a Classic Era pet have?

A Classic Era pet's estimated allowance is pet level multiplied by (loyalty minus 1). Across loyalty levels 1 to 6, a level 60 pet has an estimated range of 0 to 300 points.

On a newly tamed Classic pet, loyalty can be the limiting factor even when the required pet level is met. The upper end assumes maximum loyalty. Compare your current training screen with the selected costs before spending.
