How names work in Classic Era

Characters use a single name with 2 to 12 letters and no punctuation or spaces. It must be unique on your realm. Hardcore uses these same name-format rules.

Output is in Title case. The validator checks field length and letters, then suggests a cleaned spelling. Repeated letters and long consonant runs produce soft warnings only: we have not verified those additional client checks. A valid format does not establish availability.

Naming style by race

Names combine race-inspired sounds and endings. Gender changes which endings appear most often. Short length limits may trim a syllable, so try a longer range if you want more of the race's rhythm. Famous lore names are rejected during generation.

Human

Rounded vowels and familiar consonants make readable first names.

Dwarf

Firm starts and compact vowels give first names weight.

Night elf

Flowing vowels and light consonants favor a longer rhythm.

Gnome

Short, bouncy syllables mix plosive starts with bright vowels.

Orc

Hard starts and deep vowels build compact names.

Undead

Faded human-like syllables keep names pronounceable.

Tauren

Broad vowels and gentle nasal endings create a grounded rhythm.

Troll

Open vowels and alternating consonants give a rhythmic, Zandalari-inspired sound.

Finding a name that is not taken

Save several alternatives before opening character creation. Change the starting letter or use a longer rhythm if short names are already in use. Read your choice aloud and make sure you can type it easily during play. Adding digits or punctuation will fail the letters-only rule.

Availability depends on the realm. Keep a few different spellings that still sound natural, then check them in character creation. The generator cannot reserve a name for you.

Race and class options

Use the grid above to compare race and class options across versions. The random roll chooses uniformly among matching faction, race and class combinations. A race with more allowed classes has more chances to appear. Class exclusions only affect the roll, while the table always shows every playable combination.
