Which class should you play in TBC Anniversary?
TBC Anniversary has 10 races and 52 race and class combinations. Blood Elf brings Paladin to the Horde and Draenei brings Shaman to the Alliance. If you want to heal without changing factions, check those combinations before excluding a class you could not play in Classic.
How the class suggestions work
In TBC, your role and faction first limit the playable choices. Blood Elf appearance can then favor Paladin, while a Draenei preference can favor Shaman. Appearance, damage style, solo comfort and group utility count equally as matched answers. Unanswered questions add nothing, and tied classes are shown together. This compares your preferences with class capabilities rather than predicting raid performance.
A healer choice worked through
Choose healer and Horde, then prefer Blood Elf. There are 4 healing classes on this faction. The best matches are Paladin and Priest.
Paladin matches healer, Horde, Blood Elf. Its healing tree is Holy.
Blood Elf Paladin can match both Horde and a healer preference. Draenei Shaman can match Alliance and a healer preference. These choices are absent from Classic Era. The talent links open the TBC trees, including their additional talents.
Roles and talent trees in TBC Anniversary
TBC class choices include the additional talents in its trees. Paladin can build toward Protection, Holy or Retribution, and Shaman can choose Restoration, Elemental or Enhancement. Choosing ranged here describes damage style, so a healer can still prefer melee damage for solo play. Switching roles requires a suitable build and equipment.
| Class | Role and supporting tree |
|---|---|
| Warrior | tank: Protection damage: Arms and Fury |
| Paladin | tank: Protection healer: Holy damage: Retribution |
| Hunter | damage: Beast Mastery, Marksmanship and Survival |
| Rogue | damage: Assassination, Combat and Subtlety |
| Priest | healer: Discipline and Holy damage: Shadow |
| Shaman | healer: Restoration damage: Elemental and Enhancement |
| Mage | damage: Arcane, Fire and Frost |
| Warlock | damage: Affliction, Demonology and Destruction |
| Druid | tank: Feral Combat healer: Restoration damage: Balance and Feral Combat |
Compare playable races and racials
TBC racial descriptions below use level 70. Draenei Priest adds Symbol of Hope, while Blood Elf Priest has Consume Magic. Fear Ward is shared by Priests in this version rather than treated as a Dwarf racial. In results, your preferred race appears first and other races use name order. Focus or tap the racial buttons to compare their full effects; their numbers do not affect the class ranking.
| Race and faction | Racial example |
|---|---|
| Human Alliance | Sword Specialization: Expertise with Swords and Two-Handed Swords increased by 5. |
| Dwarf Alliance | Find Treasure: Allows the dwarf to sense nearby treasure, making it appear on the minimap. Lasts until cancelled. |
| Night Elf Alliance | Shadowmeld: Activate to slip into the shadows, reducing the chance for enemies to detect your presence. Lasts until cancelled or upon moving. Night Elf Rogues and Druids with Shadowmeld are more difficult to detect while stealthed or prowling. |
| Gnome Alliance | Escape Artist: Escape the effects of any immobilization or movement speed reduction effect. |
| Draenei Alliance | Gift of the Naaru: Heals the target of 1085 damage over 15 seconds. |
| Orc Horde | Blood Fury: Increases attack power by 282, but reduces healing effects on you by 50%. Lasts 15 seconds. |
| Undead Horde | Underwater Breathing: Underwater breath lasts 300% longer than normal. |
| Tauren Horde | War Stomp: Stuns up to 5 enemies within 8 yds for 2 seconds. |
| Troll Horde | Regeneration: Health regeneration rate increased by 10%. 10% of total Health regeneration may continue during combat. |
| Blood Elf Horde | Magic Resistance: All resistances increased by 5. |
Common mistakes when choosing a main
Do not carry a Classic faction restriction into TBC. Paladin and Shaman are available to both factions through different races. A ranged preference also does not mean every build of a class is ranged: Druid and Shaman can match either damage style through different talent choices.
Follow the TBC talent link to compare your chosen role with its Outland build options. Sharing the picker address preserves all six answers, so a group can discuss race and role preferences together.
