How to level engineering in TBC
TBC Anniversary has 127 crafting recipes here for engineering, with a maximum skill of 375. 124 recipes have a matching recipe item. 13 require skill 375 or higher, so they do not help you reach that cap.
123 additional engineering recipes are left out because their learning requirement or availability is not established for TBC. A missing crafting route does not mean you cannot train further in the game.
The starting route uses Rough Blasting Powder, consuming 1 Rough Stone per craft. The shopping list counts each ingredient consumed. If you already have Rough Stone in your bags, subtract that stock before buying more.
Recipe colors and material costs
Rough Blasting Powder requires skill 1, turns yellow at 20, green at 30 and gray at 40. Orange grants skill every craft, yellow and green grant skill less reliably, and gray grants none. The green boundary is the midpoint between yellow and gray, rounded down to a whole skill point.
| Recipe | Required, yellow, green, gray | Materials per craft |
|---|---|---|
| Rough Blasting Powder | 1, 20, 30, 40 | 1 Rough Stone |
| Portable Bronze Mortar | 165, 185, 195, 205 | 4 Bronze Tube, 1 Iron Strut, 4 Heavy Blasting Powder, 4 Medium Leather |
| Parachute Cloak | 225, 245, 255, 265 | 4 Bolt of Mageweave, 2 Shadow Silk, 1 Unstable Trigger, 4 Solid Blasting Powder |
| Masterwork Target Dummy | 275, 295, 305, 315 | 1 Mithril Casing, 1 Thorium Tube, 2 Thorium Widget, 1 Truesilver Bar, 2 Rugged Leather, 4 Runecloth |
| Force Reactive Disk | 300, 320, 330, 340 | 6 Arcanite Bar, 2 Delicate Arcanite Converter, 8 Essence of Air, 12 Living Essence, 8 Essence of Earth |
| Ultra-Spectropic Detection Goggles | 350, 360, 370, 380 | 4 Heavy Knothide Leather, 2 Khorium Bar, 2 Deep Peridot, 2 Small Prismatic Shard |
A worked engineering route
Starting at skill 1, the default target is 75. The available route reaches 60 using ~154 (71 to 236) crafts estimated. There is no eligible crafting recipe at 60, so the shopping list stops there.
| Skill | Craft | Craft count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 20 | Rough Blasting Powder | 19 |
| 20 to 31 | Rough Blasting Powder | ~16 (11 to 22) est. |
| 31 to 60 | Crafted Light Shot | ~119 (37 to 201) est. |
For this route, Rough Stone requires ~35 (30 to 41) estimated; Rough Blasting Powder requires ~119 (37 to 201) estimated; Copper Bar requires ~119 (37 to 201) estimated. Repeated ingredients are combined across steps. Crafted intermediate materials remain separate shopping entries, so subtract any that you make along the way.
Which engineering recipe uses fewer materials?
At skill 1, Rough Blasting Powder consumes 1 reagent units per craft, compared with 3 for Rough Dynamite. Each item counts as one unit, regardless of its gold price. The route minimizes expected units over the entire skill range, including extra attempts after recipes turn yellow.
Mechanical Squirrel can be learned with Schematic: Mechanical Squirrel. Check recipe access, quests and specializations before shopping. Exclude recipes you cannot learn or whose materials cost too much on your realm. Lock a known recipe to give it priority whenever it can grant skill; overlapping locks use the lower expected reagent total.
How estimated engineering craft counts work
Rough Blasting Powder has a yellow boundary of 20 and a gray boundary of 40. Its estimated skill gain chance at skill 30 is (40 minus 30) divided by (40 minus 20). Expected crafts equal one divided by that chance. For skill 30 to 31, this gives ~2 (1 to 6) crafts est.
The Rough Blasting Powder range covers at least 80% of outcomes under this estimated chance model, using the variance of independent attempts. It describes crafting luck under that model, rather than a guarantee about your game. For the longer route to 75, the planner recalculates chance after every skill gain. Update your current skill as you craft, and train the next profession rank before your current rank limit.
What differs in other versions?
| Version | Skill cap | Recipes | Recipes absent here |
|---|---|---|---|
| TBC | 375 | 127 | None |
| Classic | 300 | 68 | 0 |
| Forever | 300 | 169 | 82 |
TBC uses build 2.5.6.70577 for engineering. Classic has no additional recipe spells in this comparison. Forever adds recipes such as SAF-T Tabs and SAF-T Dynamite.
