How to plan your Classic leveling route
Reaching level 60 from level 1 takes 4,084,700 XP. Your race chooses the starting zone. Your faction removes the opposite faction's zones. Each band ends at a level boundary, so XP is counted once even when zone ranges overlap.
How this compares with RestedXP
RestedXP follows quest steps inside the game. This page gives you a Classic session plan to keep on your phone or second screen: zone bands, optional dungeons, 4,084,700 XP to the level cap and a training budget together. Build 1.15.9.70576 is shown with the plan so you can see which version its numbers describe. Share the address to reopen the same race, class, levels and pace. There is no quest list or automatic quest tracking here.
Which Classic zones should you choose?
There are 37 zones with usable level ranges and 21 dungeon options. The plan prefers a suitable range on your starting continent before suggesting a crossing. In the default Human plan, Elwynn Forest, Westfall, Duskwood, Stranglethorn Vale, The Hinterlands, Burning Steppes, Eastern Plaguelands cover the bands.
Hardcore uses the same XP curve as Classic Era. A matching level range is not a safety rating. Check enemy levels, patrols and escape routes before entering a new area or dungeon.
Starting zones by race
| Race | Starting zone | Levels |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Elwynn Forest | 1 to 14 |
| Dwarf | Dun Morogh | 1 to 14 |
| Gnome | Dun Morogh | 1 to 14 |
| Night elf | Teldrassil | 1 to 14 |
| Orc | Durotar | 1 to 14 |
| Troll | Durotar | 1 to 14 |
| Tauren | Mulgore | 1 to 14 |
| Undead | Tirisfal Glades | 1 to 14 |
How much XP does each band need?
Add the XP needed for each level from the first level in the band up to the level before its end. The level you arrive at belongs to the next band. For example, level 1 to 10 needs 27,600 XP in Classic Era. This plan starts at an empty XP bar. Use the leveling calculator for a partially completed level or rested XP.
| Level band | Zone | XP needed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 10 | Elwynn Forest | 27,600 |
| 10 to 20 | Westfall | 139,600 |
| 20 to 30 | Duskwood | 331,800 |
| 30 to 40 | Stranglethorn Vale | 655,400 |
| 40 to 50 | The Hinterlands | 1,151,700 |
| 50 to 55 | Burning Steppes | 802,800 |
| 55 to 60 | Eastern Plaguelands | 975,800 |
What gold should you keep for training?
The Classic track lists 85 Warrior training entries with prices and matching ability levels. Each band groups them by level. The running reserve adds your selected purchases from your current level through that stop. Uncheck abilities you already know or will skip. Quest abilities, talent purchases, books, pet training and mount purchases are outside this budget.
For example, the default Warrior's level 4 stop contains 2 spells. Budget ~2 to 2 silver est. for this stop. The running reserve is ~2 to 3 silver est. through this stop. These ranges allow 20% below to 20% above older trainer prices for budgeting. Your trainer can charge differently. A missing price stays empty, and any running reserve with missing prices is marked partial.
| Level | Training budget | Riding rank |
|---|---|---|
| 40 (est.) | ~72 to 108 gold est. | Apprentice |
| 60 (est.) | ~720 to 1,080 gold est. | Journeyman |
Classic riding uses older training thresholds and prices. Treat this reserve as an estimate until you check the riding trainer. Riding is optional in the plan. It does not include buying a mount or class mount quest expenses.
Trainer and weapon master map markers are not available yet. A zone map link appears with a route stop when that map is available.
How are the time ranges calculated?
Session pace is XP gained divided by minutes played, multiplied by the minutes in an hour. Band time is band XP divided by that hourly pace. The estimated range allows 20% either side of that pace. Measure a session that includes the travel, deaths and breaks you expect in your next one.
Grinding uses same level, normal enemies and the leveling calculator's kill model. Its estimated range uses 30 to 70 seconds per kill. Outland bands use the Outland kill formula in TBC. Neither model predicts quest availability or your group's clear speed.
Should you include dungeons?
Dungeon options overlap the level band and are on its continent. They are alternatives within that band, so they add no extra XP requirement or promised time saving. A range means you can consider the dungeon, not that every enemy or wing suits your level.
| Dungeon | Levels | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Ragefire Chasm | 13 to 22 | Orgrimmar |
| Wailing Caverns | 15 to 28 | The Barrens |
| Deadmines | 15 to 28 | Westfall |
| Shadowfang Keep | 18 to 32 | Silverpine Forest |
| Blackfathom Deeps | 20 to 34 | Ashenvale |
Only include a run when you have a group and enough time to finish it. Keep your session pace current after a dungeon session rather than subtracting a guessed reward from the route.
How does the XP total compare between versions?
In Classic, the same level 1 to 60 journey takes 4,084,700 XP. Compare the same start and target below before using another version's route. Matching XP totals do not guarantee matching zones, training prices or dungeon rewards.
| Version | XP, level 1 to 60 | Level cap |
|---|---|---|
| Forever | 4,084,700 | 60 |
| Classic | 4,084,700 | 60 |
| TBC | 3,379,400 | 70 |
Common route planning mistakes
Do not count an optional dungeon as a second copy of a level band. Do not treat the end of a zone's range as a promise that its quests will fill every level. If you run out of useful quests, use another zone in the same band and keep the same XP target.
The route favors continent continuity, not the shortest travel path between quest hubs. Travel spells depend on your class, level and learned abilities. A travel reminder does not change XP or subtract travel time.
