How to level cooking in Classic
Classic Era has 68 crafting recipes here for cooking, with a maximum skill of 300. 65 recipes have a matching recipe item. 0 require skill 300 or higher, so they do not help you reach that cap.
22 additional cooking recipes are left out because their learning requirement or availability is not established for Classic. A missing crafting route does not mean you cannot train further in the game.
The starting route uses Basic Campfire, consuming 1 Simple Wood per craft. The shopping list counts each ingredient consumed. If you already have Simple Wood in your bags, subtract that stock before buying more.
Recipe colors and material costs
Basic Campfire requires skill 1, turns yellow at 25, green at 50 and gray at 75. Orange grants skill every craft, yellow and green grant skill less reliably, and gray grants none. The green boundary is the midpoint between yellow and gray, rounded down to a whole skill point.
| Recipe | Required, yellow, green, gray | Materials per craft |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Campfire | 1, 25, 50, 75 | 1 Simple Wood |
| Beer Basted Boar Ribs | 40, 60, 80, 100 | 1 Crag Boar Rib, 1 Rhapsody Malt |
| Crocolisk Steak | 80, 120, 140, 160 | 1 Crocolisk Meat, 1 Mild Spices |
| Redridge Goulash | 125, 135, 155, 175 | 1 Crisp Spider Meat, 1 Tough Condor Meat |
| Hot Wolf Ribs | 175, 215, 235, 255 | 1 Red Wolf Meat, 1 Hot Spices |
| Cooked Glossy Mightfish | 225, 265, 285, 305 | 1 Raw Glossy Mightfish, 1 Soothing Spices |
A worked cooking route
Starting at skill 1, the default target is 75. The available route reaches 75 using ~74 (74 to 74) crafts estimated. That covers 74 skill points.
| Skill | Craft | Craft count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 25 | Basic Campfire | 24 |
| 25 to 26 | Basic Campfire | ~1 (1 to 1) est. |
| 26 to 45 | Charred Wolf Meat | 19 |
| 45 to 46 | Charred Wolf Meat | ~1 (1 to 1) est. |
| 46 to 60 | Scorpid Surprise | 14 |
| 60 to 61 | Scorpid Surprise | ~1 (1 to 1) est. |
| 61 to 75 | Longjaw Mud Snapper | 14 |
For this route, Simple Wood requires ~25 (25 to 25) estimated; Stringy Wolf Meat requires ~20 (20 to 20) estimated; Scorpid Stinger requires ~15 (15 to 15) estimated. Repeated ingredients are combined across steps. Crafted intermediate materials remain separate shopping entries, so subtract any that you make along the way.
Which cooking recipe uses fewer materials?
At skill 1, Basic Campfire consumes 1 reagent units per craft, compared with 1 for Charred Wolf Meat. Each item counts as one unit, regardless of its gold price. The route minimizes expected units over the entire skill range, including extra attempts after recipes turn yellow.
Brilliant Smallfish can be learned with Recipe: Brilliant Smallfish. Check recipe access, quests and specializations before shopping. Exclude recipes you cannot learn or whose materials cost too much on your realm. Lock a known recipe to give it priority whenever it can grant skill; overlapping locks use the lower expected reagent total.
How estimated cooking craft counts work
Basic Campfire has a yellow boundary of 25 and a gray boundary of 75. Its estimated skill gain chance at skill 50 is (75 minus 50) divided by (75 minus 25). Expected crafts equal one divided by that chance. For skill 50 to 51, this gives ~2 (1 to 6) crafts est.
The Basic Campfire range covers at least 80% of outcomes under this estimated chance model, using the variance of independent attempts. It describes crafting luck under that model, rather than a guarantee about your game. For the longer route to 75, the planner recalculates chance after every skill gain. Update your current skill as you craft, and train the next profession rank before your current rank limit.
