How to level alchemy in TBC
TBC Anniversary has 127 crafting recipes here for alchemy, with a maximum skill of 375. 121 recipes have a matching recipe item. 5 require skill 375 or higher, so they do not help you reach that cap.
59 additional alchemy recipes are left out because their learning requirement or availability is not established for TBC. A missing crafting route does not mean you cannot train further in the game.
The starting route uses Elixir of Lion's Strength, consuming 1 Earthroot, 1 Silverleaf, 1 Empty Vial per craft. The shopping list counts each ingredient consumed. If you already have Earthroot in your bags, subtract that stock before buying more.
Recipe colors and material costs
Elixir of Lion's Strength requires skill 1, turns yellow at 55, green at 75 and gray at 95. Orange grants skill every craft, yellow and green grant skill less reliably, and gray grants none. The green boundary is the midpoint between yellow and gray, rounded down to a whole skill point.
| Recipe | Required, yellow, green, gray | Materials per craft |
|---|---|---|
| Elixir of Lion's Strength | 1, 55, 75, 95 | 1 Earthroot, 1 Silverleaf, 1 Empty Vial |
| Shadow Oil | 165, 190, 210, 230 | 4 Fadeleaf, 4 Grave Moss, 1 Leaded Vial |
| Ghost Dye | 245, 260, 280, 300 | 2 Ghost Mushroom, 1 Purple Dye, 1 Crystal Vial |
| Greater Dreamless Sleep Potion | 275, 290, 310, 330 | 2 Dreamfoil, 1 Golden Sansam, 1 Crystal Vial |

| Transmute: Primal Air to Fire | 350, 365, 372, 380 | 1 Primal Air |
A worked alchemy route
Starting at skill 1, the default target is 75. The available route reaches 75 using ~74 (74 to 74) crafts estimated. That covers 74 skill points.
| Skill | Craft | Craft count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 55 | Elixir of Lion's Strength | 54 |
| 55 to 56 | Elixir of Lion's Strength | ~1 (1 to 1) est. |
| 56 to 65 | Minor Mana Potion | 9 |
| 65 to 66 | Minor Mana Potion | ~1 (1 to 1) est. |
| 66 to 75 | Swiftness Potion | 9 |
For this route, Earthroot requires ~55 (55 to 55) estimated; Silverleaf requires ~65 (65 to 65) estimated; Empty Vial requires ~74 (74 to 74) estimated. Repeated ingredients are combined across steps. Crafted intermediate materials remain separate shopping entries, so subtract any that you make along the way.
Which alchemy recipe uses fewer materials?
At skill 1, Elixir of Lion's Strength consumes 3 reagent units per craft, compared with 3 for Minor Healing Potion. Each item counts as one unit, regardless of its gold price. The route minimizes expected units over the entire skill range, including extra attempts after recipes turn yellow.
Elixir of Minor Fortitude can be learned with Deprecated Recipe: Elixir of Fortitude. Check recipe access, quests and specializations before shopping. Exclude recipes you cannot learn or whose materials cost too much on your realm. Lock a known recipe to give it priority whenever it can grant skill; overlapping locks use the lower expected reagent total.
How estimated alchemy craft counts work
Elixir of Lion's Strength has a yellow boundary of 55 and a gray boundary of 95. Its estimated skill gain chance at skill 75 is (95 minus 75) divided by (95 minus 55). Expected crafts equal one divided by that chance. For skill 75 to 76, this gives ~2 (1 to 6) crafts est.
The Elixir of Lion's Strength range covers at least 80% of outcomes under this estimated chance model, using the variance of independent attempts. It describes crafting luck under that model, rather than a guarantee about your game. For the longer route to 75, the planner recalculates chance after every skill gain. Update your current skill as you craft, and train the next profession rank before your current rank limit.
